Mistaken email identity

Rocky Mountain Bank sent out some information to the wrong people somehow. Now the confidential files of 1,325 people are in the Gmail account of some random guy. The bank tried asking Google for the name of the individual who owns the account, but Google naturally refused. Now the bank is sueing Google for access to that information–a suit which has recieved some media attention. I’d bet Rocky Mountain Bank could use some online reputation management right about now.

The Harvard Journal of Law has come out with a new 45 page report called Internet Defamation as a Profit Center: The Monetization of Online Harrasment. Google-Bomb has a great synopsis of the report, and as you could guess–the report is overwhelmingly negative. I’d bet customers of corporate reputation management companies would disagree with the overwhelmingly negative presentation of the idea of reputation management.

The result of online libel is often lost customers, which is something no company wants to experience. Negative publicity has always existed in one form or another, but the advent of the Internet has made it so that negative publicity proliferates because any Joe or Jane Sixpack can skewer any company or product they dislike for whatever reason. This is both the advantage and problem of the Internet–it’s communicationd are instantaneous, it is accessible universally, and it what is said cannot be quarantined.
